Week 8

Bling Empire, a reality television, it records the daily life of a group of wealthy Asian Americans. When I watched it, I really watched it as a leisure and entertainment video, but there is nothing worthy of serious study. However, I have to say that this documentary is still worth discussing.

First of all, I want to talk about their lives. After watching the video, we know that they can go to Paris by plane for just a meal. They can call the Dior counter to choose clothes at home. They can also experience being a flight attendant because they like to experience it. All of these, someone will definitely say that they are very extravagant. However, my first thought was, isn't this what they can do? They were born in such a wealthy family without the troubles of life. Isn't it normal to do such things? This society is like this, there is no absolute fairness, just enjoy yourself.

Secondly, let's talk about their character. In fact, I think some of them still very real. Just like Kelly. Although she is a rich person, she does not show that she and Andrew are in a different position in love. They are like a normal couple. They will quarrel and make changes for each other. (But I think Andrew has tendency to domestic violence. He yelled at Kelly, this is something I can't bear.) The reason why I say this is that I feel that they are also human beings, and they are no different from most people. It's just that making money is most people's daily routine, but spending money is their daily routine.

Finally, I think this documentary will cause a deep misunderstanding for Americans to watch on Netflix. Including many aspects, not just limited to the matter of whether they have money or not. It is undeniable that in ancient China, giving birth to a boy was a very important thing, because ancient emperors always inherited the throne to boys. People think that boys have better physical strength and are more useful than girls. But the times have been developing for so long, and most people don't care about this anymore. As Asian Americans, it is understandable that they do not understand the history and development of Asia, but it is misleading to tell people this wrong thing and spread it in the United States, isn't it?

  1. I also couldn't really bear Andrew yelling at his girlfriend. But after reading the article regarding what is true and what isn't, I think that a lot of the drama had to do with the scripting and editing. Supposedly, editors removed the calmer sections of their quarrel for effect and I do hope that she isn't suffering in real life.

  2. I find it interesting that the birth of a boy actually is no longer seen as super important in China anymore. Usually in media they still have that concept included pretty often. I see it quite a bit in movies and I definitely do think it can be misleading to keep that in films and even reality TV shows.

  3. It is hard to trust this series since it paints Andrew to be bad while he claims otherwise in the interview.
