Week 6


As an Asian, I really like Asian entertainment culture. This is the reason why I want to study film and music, and then return to China to work in the entertainment industry. The K-pop we watched this week is indeed very popular all over the world. This was discovered after I came to the United States. This shows that Asian Americans have made great contributions in this regard. I am vert happy to see the output of Asian culture.


K.YOON said in the article that K-pop is mixed culture. I totally agree with this. When I discussed this issue with my friends before, I also said that combinations like BTS and Blackpink are popular internationally, although they are also popular in Korea. The reason is that their music contains very international things, like BTS's Boy With Luv we watched this week. They invited a "foreigner" to sing their English part.


In addition, I am very interested in their English lyrics. Because I am not a native English speaker, I am very curious what the native English speakers think about their English lyrics and English pronunciation. Is it strange? Or because America itself is a country of cultural integration, it feels nothing about these Asian songs with English lyrics?


By the way, although I am not their fan, Jung Kook is so handsome!!! 😍

    I personally think that they are all quite beautiful, almost unnaturally so. I'm not a fan of k-pop but my children are and I think it is very interesting that they can sing all of these groups songs both in English as well as the Korean parts. I think that their English fluency varies but they all are legible enough to be completely understandable. I know one member of Blackpink grew up in Australia and English has been an important part of Korean culture for a very long time. I think what is more important is the fact that these groups are among the first to penetrate the US's "English only" culture that is prevalent in popular culture.

    As far as I know, most Chinese thought that this film didn’t reflect real Chinese and Chinese culture. From some aspects, like the living style, the clothing style, and the “Chinese thoughts” in the film. For example, in the film, we can know that Mrs. Yang doesn’t like Rachel because she is an America. But in China, we don’t have this kind of prejudice. Something like that.   But for me, I think that this film maybe truly reflected some people who are really rich. But nothing is absolute. Also, I think that the reason why some Chinese don’t like this film is that the story is not attractive. Because when I saw the film at the first half, I can know what will happen next and how is the ending going. Week 10

   Kim's Convenience gave me the feeling that it was a bit funny at first, but not so funny. It's like saying something funny on purpose, but it makes me unable to laugh. Maybe it's because I am not very sensitive to this type of drama. Some jokes are a little bit too common. But as a whole, after seeing it, I feel that this is a great comedy.   But in terms of the interpretation of the character's personality, I think this drama makes me really like it. Mr. Kim here showed a very mean feeling in the first half of each episode, make me didn't like him very much at the beginning. But at the end of each episode, he always showed his love for children and a gentle but awkward side. All these make Mr. Kim's character more three-dimensional, and I like him very much.     The difference between the two generations of Korean Canadians can be seen from this play.     This week, we saw Margaret Cho's show: PsyCHO. A t first, when I was watching, I couldn't understand what she was talking about. Because the jokes and humor in America are really different from Asia. So that I cannot understand why she was always talking about the topic of sex. But after I saw the whole show and read the materials, I start to understand her.   As I said before, many facts are told through jokes. This is the best way to tell others what you can't or don't want to say. Therefore, as an Asian American, Margaret Cho told some of the things she has experienced, as well as some bad things that others have experienced, such as sexual assault, through this show. This allows the public to pay attention to those victims and speak for them.    Margaret Cho talked about many "taboo" topics in this show. This is something I did not expect.
