Week 5

 

  Humor itself is an art form to entertain the public. Usually, using humor to express deeper inner thoughts is not very effective. I mean, when I watch comedies, I have only one purpose, which is to be happy. I don’t want to think about what a performer means while I’m watching a comedy. For me, at that moment, I just need to be funny. It's hard to adjust other’s taste, so I won't discuss those individual examples. Let's talk about the public opinion. 

  On the basis of comedy, PEN15 adds many social phenomena that are now attracting attention, such as school violence. And when a period that teenagers' emotions are emerging, how can they do? But I still don't like this kind of language and physical insults. Sometimes, verbal violence can cause more harm than physical violence. (It may be that I don’t know much about American humor culture. If you can, you can tell me what you think about it.)

"There are Asian men who batter Asian women and Asian parents who better their children." (P561) I agree that there will indeed be "some" such phenomena, but it must not be all of them. Every time I see remarks like this, all I think about is that things should not be generalized. Indeed, this sentence is not a very absolute word, but readers will usually turn these words into an absolute word when reading it. After reading it, readers may understand that Asian men beat women and Asian parents beat children. Then they naturally turned this matter into their stereotype of Asians.

    I agree with you on how I like to watch shows to be happy. There were some scenes in this show in which verbal insults were directed at Maya regarding her appearance. I also don't think that was too funny and that it really hurt her feelings.

    You have a really great point. It is really easy to believing in absolute word and turn them into stereotypes.

    I agree that verbal insults can hurt more than physical bullying. Having grown up among students similar to those in the show, I can attest that at this age, Americans really talk like this and treat each other in this way. I think it is an extension of materialism and talking down to others as a means to improve your self esteem.

    I agree that this show is cringe worthy for how it depicts US middle schoolers. I find it funny because it reflects alot of what I experienced at that age but I do agree that it takes the joke really far. I think that sometimes it takes the joke too far.

    As far as I know, most Chinese thought that this film didn’t reflect real Chinese and Chinese culture. From some aspects, like the living style, the clothing style, and the “Chinese thoughts” in the film. For example, in the film, we can know that Mrs. Yang doesn’t like Rachel because she is an America. But in China, we don’t have this kind of prejudice. Something like that.   But for me, I think that this film maybe truly reflected some people who are really rich. But nothing is absolute. Also, I think that the reason why some Chinese don’t like this film is that the story is not attractive. Because when I saw the film at the first half, I can know what will happen next and how is the ending going. And maybe that’s because I saw too many TV shows in China, and a few years ago, several of these kind of films or novels have been made in China.     But in general, I like the part that Rachel played Mahjong ( 麻将 /Majiang in Chinese) with Mrs. Yang.    Kim's Convenience gave me the feeling that it was a bit funny at first, but not so funny. It's like saying something funny on purpose, but it makes me unable to laugh. Maybe it's because I am not very sensitive to this type of drama. Some jokes are a little bit too common. But as a whole, after seeing it, I feel that this is a great comedy.   But in terms of the interpretation of the character's personality, I think this drama makes me really like it. Mr. Kim here showed a very mean feeling in the first half of each episode, make me didn't like him very much at the beginning. But at the end of each episode, he always showed his love for children and a gentle but awkward side. All these make Mr. Kim's character more three-dimensional, and I like him very much.     The difference between the two generations of Korean Canadians can be seen from this play.     This week, we saw Margaret Cho's show: PsyCHO. A t first, when I was watching, I couldn't understand what she was talking about. Because the jokes and humor in America are really different from Asia. So that I cannot understand why she was always talking about the topic of sex. But after I saw the whole show and read the materials, I start to understand her.   As I said before, many facts are told through jokes. This is the best way to tell others what you can't or don't want to say. Therefore, as an Asian American, Margaret Cho told some of the things she has experienced, as well as some bad things that others have experienced, such as sexual assault, through this show. This allows the public to pay attention to those victims and speak for them.    Margaret Cho talked about many "taboo" topics in this show. This is something I did not expect.
