Introduction

 Hi! I'm Xiyue Zhang, and you can call me Sally if you want. I'm a sophomore and major in film. I really like singing and dancing. So, maybe I will minor in music. Also, traveling and seeing films are my hobbies. In the winter break, I saw three films in China. They are really good, including the plot, the main characters, the songs, and the special effects. About the type of film, I like comedy and Chinese mythology. 


I'm in China now. Everything is good here. In the winter break, I went to a dancing studio, and a media studio. Also, I find a new hobby recently, which is dubbing. I found that there are so many excellent works and voice workers in China. Maybe it can be one of my dream jobs in the future. 


In the film history, I'm interested in the sound part. I used to see a video or a documentary (I don't really remember). It showed the way to make a sound in a video. For example, if you want to make a sound of thunder, you can use a big sheet iron and flap it. Or, if you want to make a sound of a broken bone, you can buy a bunch of celery and break them. That's so interesting. And because of my dubbing's hobby recently, I became more interested in sound. 


And why I'm taking this class? Because I really like asian culture especially Chinese culture because I am a Chinese. And I want to know more about Asian American, because we have both similar and different points. So, that's so attractive for me to know more about that!

    Hey Sally-- I think it's so cool that you're into dubbing! Have you been working on adding in new languages, or sound effects/music?

      Not yet. I just got a new hobby but I didn't have time and opportunity to work on that.😩

    Lawrence is the perfect place to have an interest in sound because we have a large conservatory. Julie McQuinn teaches a film sound course there and there are many courses in electronic music and related topics. One of the major themes in Asian American film is the relationship between Asia and Asian American populations. You have a really unique perspective to explore these topics.

    As far as I know, most Chinese thought that this film didn’t reflect real Chinese and Chinese culture. From some aspects, like the living style, the clothing style, and the “Chinese thoughts” in the film. For example, in the film, we can know that Mrs. Yang doesn’t like Rachel because she is an America. But in China, we don’t have this kind of prejudice. Something like that.   But for me, I think that this film maybe truly reflected some people who are really rich. But nothing is absolute. Also, I think that the reason why some Chinese don’t like this film is that the story is not attractive. Because when I saw the film at the first half, I can know what will happen next and how is the ending going. And maybe that’s because I saw too many TV shows in China, and a few years ago, several of these kind of films or novels have been made in China.     But in general, I like the part that Rachel played Mahjong ( 麻将 /Majiang in Chinese) with Mrs. Yang. Week 10

   Kim's Convenience gave me the feeling that it was a bit funny at first, but not so funny. It's like saying something funny on purpose, but it makes me unable to laugh. Maybe it's because I am not very sensitive to this type of drama. Some jokes are a little bit too common. But as a whole, after seeing it, I feel that this is a great comedy.   But in terms of the interpretation of the character's personality, I think this drama makes me really like it. Mr. Kim here showed a very mean feeling in the first half of each episode, make me didn't like him very much at the beginning. But at the end of each episode, he always showed his love for children and a gentle but awkward side. All these make Mr. Kim's character more three-dimensional, and I like him very much.     The difference between the two generations of Korean Canadians can be seen from this play.     This week, we saw Margaret Cho's show: PsyCHO. A t first, when I was watching, I couldn't understand what she was talking about. Because the jokes and humor in America are really different from Asia. So that I cannot understand why she was always talking about the topic of sex. But after I saw the whole show and read the materials, I start to understand her.   As I said before, many facts are told through jokes. This is the best way to tell others what you can't or don't want to say. Therefore, as an Asian American, Margaret Cho told some of the things she has experienced, as well as some bad things that others have experienced, such as sexual assault, through this show. This allows the public to pay attention to those victims and speak for them.    Margaret Cho talked about many "taboo" topics in this show. This is something I did not expect.
